Hello,
Here is a link to the badge with pierced lettering. I have also seen examples with engraved lettering.

Dear All

This is perfect! Exactly what I was after, these are really beautiful badges and i feel a real affinity towards them!

Now the problem is where do I gt a genuine one or good copy for my slouch hat!!

Everyone has been really helpful on this query, can't wait for the various books I've ordered to arrive now - really getting into the SH history!!

I've posted a WANTED advert in the classified section so if anyone fancies selling then let me know!

Thanks to all again!

Cheers Mike

Hi All, the badges Alex put on and the SCH title were Boer War badges, all worn on the slouch hat and mostly made from sheet brass. As a matter of interest the Scottish Horse was raised as a South African unit during the Boer War and was disbanded in SA in around 1907. Regards Andrew

Many thanks - that would be appreciated!

Until Alex decides to sell me his whole collection - LOL! Does anyone know where to get good repro badges of the SH - Boer War period?

Mike

Andrew,
I never knew there was a unit of the Scottish Horse still going in SA until 1907. That's very interesting. I knew the regiment was raised there, but always thought that it was demobilized in 1902 and that was why the Duke of Atholl reformed it in 1903 in Scotland. Hence the 1903 Pattern badge.
I'm sad to say that there is no longer a Scottish Horse museum in Dunkeld, it closed in the 1990's! However, much of there record books and enlistment books are now held in the museum at the Cathedral in Dunkeld. The artifacts from the museum, I believe were sent to the National Museum of Scotland, in Edinburgh.

Hi Andrew and Ypres,
Interesting lot of old badges on that South African site.
Sorry to hear that the SH museum is no longer in Dunkeld. We thought it a very good one for its size.
Regards, Tinto

I am sad to hear that the museum is closed. I was hoping to visit Scotland next year and would have liked to see it. The Scottish Horse was one of the units that formed part of the Transvaal Volunteers(1902-07).

Regards

Andrew
