1. All brass die cast with crossed whips
2. Bimetal horse looking left
3. As above with horse facing right.

I have no evidence as to which order (or even if they were sequential or concurrent) they were worn.

For discussion! As you can see, the 'Pony' is within the Garter.
P.S. apologies for the flash I'm still getting to grips with the camera!

I would very much welcome comments on this badge.
(Unable to scan back of badge as my flat-plate scanner blurs all raised items)
Badge is either bronze or blackened brass, but I would go for the former. Horse appears silver. Note that it is within the oval and has bulbous eye and prominent foreleg muscle. The horse has been sweated on to brass/bz underlying metal.
Die-struck; slider.
The workmanship is superb but I am still worried. Ebay purchase some while ago.

Griff shows a genuine on here. This bagde has been massively faked but Griff's shows the right detail and casting.

You'll all be really surprised to hear someone has a solid silver version.

Default Army Remount Service

Hi gents

With a view to finally getting some badges framed properly I notice the Army Remounts Service is sometimes referred to as a Cavalry unit? I was under the impression it was a Service unit?

Cheers

Colin

Hi Colin,

I have always thought that it was a service unit too. It was a part of the Army Service Corps, charged with supplying horses to calvary units. Divided into companies in depots and barracks.

Regards,

Dave

Hiya Colin & Dave,

Without going into too much detail;

The ASC Remounts were actually made up from a large selection of any unit who used horses, from the Household Cavalry through to Hussars, Dragoons, RHA and of course ASC HT units and they were highly trained individuals

As the horses arrived at the depots from USA, Canada and of course Ireland they would be graded from "A" (top grade) for Household Cavalry units etc down to "D" Grade (ASC units). [Horses, Mules & Donkeys]

(This would be similar to the Infantry units having "A1 fit" graded soldiers)

It was seen as important for each of the Horse units in question to oversee and also be involved in the training of these animals.

They were attached to the ARS Depots, not the ASC itself, hence the reason for your confusion.

It was then decided to have all these experts in the training of horses under one cap badge, hence the ARS (Army Remount Service) cap badge, even though they were still a part of their Cavalry units, they all wore the cap badge of the ARS.

Default Remount

Hi all,

I have a question about the attached remount badge. The hoof on the hind leg: it seems to have either

1) broken off?
2) repaired at some stage and re-broken?
3) die-flaw?

Anyone have an opinion?

Best, Tim

Tim,
I would say it is just a manufacturing fault and probably not subsequent damage.

Lambourne made a lot of the Remounts badges and such faults are not uncommon! From what you show the badge looks genuine enough!

Andy

Thanks Andy, it is Lambourne and I suspected it was just a manufacturing issue.

Cheers Mate.
