New finds, GI bringbacks
Was pleased to add a small collection of patches brought home by an American GI. The individual whom I got them from said the GI was collecting patches during his time overseas. Many nice pieces in the group. Was pleased to get this off uniform set of Green Howard's, even if they have seen some wear.
In addition there were a few unknowns. Have looked as many places as possible but the bottom 2 have alluded identification. Will likely be putting some of these up for trade or sale on the forum as time allows. thanks Jack

Thank you Dob. Many of the patches are of the silk woven type as shown in the 2 patches in my original post.

A couple of other's from the group. First is the patch for the 5 Commando. This is one of the few patches I wanted out of the whole group for my own collection. Second is the 4th Searchlight Regt RA.
As noted in a post above many of the pieces are of the silk woven type. The GI was an Army Sgt from all indications and he gathered up U.S. units and British unit patches while in service. Jack http:// http://

4th Search Light Regiment RA/RMA
Formed in 1940 from one RA Battery, one Royal Malta Artillery Battery and a Royal Engineers (Fortress) Company, disbanded in 1944. Marc Interested in this one myself.

Does anyone know if the 'silk woven' badges are early or late war manufacture?
Also, were they an 'economy' manufacturing technique as they look like they were manufactured in rolls and then individual badges cut from the roll? They are nice looking badges. Paul |

Paul, from what I can tell they span all through war as far as manufacture. I am basing this on the fact that some of the units ceased to exist as an organization as early as 42, 43, 44 and so on. Whether on rolls I cannot say but it would seem likely. Many of these have the corners clipped so unsure how that would have worked coming off of a roll.
In addition from what I have seen some of these signs only existed in this type of weave. The 5 Commando examples I have seen have all been of this type of weave. The 3rd Armored Group also being similar, having only found one example from a C&T auction of Colin Churchill’s collection. Would like to hear other thoughts. The individual who brought these home appears to have had access mainly to this type of patch or the maker’s stock. There were a few others but mainly this type. Thanks Jack

I admit that I know nothing about these woven silk badges (I still have a lot to learn about British formation signs), but I always assumed they were post-World War II. I have to say, though, that they are strikingly similar to the so-called "Liberty Loan" patches that were sold in America during and after the First World War to raise funds...

So the Crusader and the Spade sign are both 236th Company? Jack
