Default Open letter on theft of materials

Hi paulbear PAUL AYERST here.
There is a growing problem all over with images being highjacked from forums and being used elsewhere without authorization for personal gain. There is in fact one person I have detected from PAKISTAN on this sight trying to buy badges for his repro activities abroad.
Is there any way like many other sights where you can copyright the album section per say and set up a system where only the member has rights to enter save upload etc. In fact the Albums area become view only.Right now I can go into anyones album save one of his pictures and do as I please with it THIS IS NOT RIGHT it is private property

I think this is something which need to be addressed urgently.

We can easily block access to the albums based on a member's post count, ie make is inaccessible to those with less than ten posts (or whatever number). Is that the sort of thing required?

While it is possible to set up pages so that a 'right-click' is disallowed, this only stops people from saving images through that simple method. Even if the 'right-click' is disabled, it is still possible to capture images from any webpage by other methods.

The most secure means would be an automated system that adds a forum watermark to every image. That would at least give the borrower difficulties in trying to use it for their own purposes. To be effective, the watermark would have to be across the central part of the image, and not on a corner where the background could be cropped or re-edited to remove it.

Default Observation

Not being mobile I waited for years for a glengary badge of the 47th Foot to appear on Ebay. Last year one appeared it eventualy brought a price I could not afford. Since then several glengarry badges for the 47th obvious restrikes have appeared on Ebay it would appear that hard to get badges are being bought for use as masters to generate a new set of restrikes.

I can disable right click in that Canadian badge index, you have to get rid of the image save feature in Internet explorer as well, not foolproof as you say, but will probably still cull a large number of copiers.

Default Open letter etc.

I feel that there are two points here : Firstly, the question of copyright. The only way of challenging copyright theft is within the legal jurisdiction where the offence has taken place. If someone in Pakistan - or Saudi Arabia - or Russia - or Kazakhstan - chooses to use your images, there is not a thing to be done about it - in fact or in law. Remember that the offence is being committed in a foreign jurisdiction and that country's attitude to internet crime will be quite different to our own - and our own is in its infancy. Secondly, the forum watermark is indeed an answer but, I understand, is quite expensive to implement. However, whose copyright would it be ? The forum's or the originator"s ? Whose watermark would appear ? As an example, images displayed on eBay become the property of eBay and bear the eBay watermark - surely that would not be appropriate on this Forum. Certainly an issue for debate but one without an easy answer. Regards. David

This has been my point all along, that they can obtain an original, and one will probably be necessary for accuracy in the badge's third dimension.

we can disable right click on the forum, but it will be a pain.....and it's easily defeated.

stuck a poll on here to check the idea with everyone.

I think we should make the effort give some security and maybe give advice about personal copyright of individual material in albums and uploads.
