Canadian Staybrite badge...
Again, the BMBF identifies interesting areas for research. Being Canadian, I had recognized that the British staybrite badges introduced in the post war period were, for sometime, highly disliked. I had not known that there was a change in opinion over the last few years and that they had become highly collectable. There was at least one Canadian badge made in staybrite style. The Royal Canadian Regiment ordered a run of badges from Gaunt, and they were a two piece staybrite. Rumour has it that they were refused due to a manufacturing issue, but some made it to issue.
Are there any more Canadian badges made in staybrite style? |

Bill please clarify the term 'Staybrite'. I think the newer Irish Regt Bagdes may very well fall into this catagory. I need a clear explaination of the term to be certain.

Annodized aluminium....
Hi Cliff, A start on a definition of staybrite is a type of anodized aluminum, but that may not be enough to qualify it as staybrite. See the link for a discussion of staybrite in the British section of the forum.
Many Canadian badges appear to be anodized aluminum, but I don't think they are. The staybrite badges are very light and almost seem to be plastic. Last edited by Bill A; 20-05-08 at 10:38 AM. Reason: sp |

I saw a badge once that was some kind of plastic plated in something like chrome or nickle. once started it could be peeled. (It was British) Ray

Hey Bill, many thanks. I had looked at that thread after I posted here. The Irish Badge I am thinking of in not aluminum based. I am not certain of the base metal but it is heavier than aluminum but lighter than some other badges I have.

I know my dad rec'd a couple sample stay bright Lincoln and Welland badges when he was CO in the 80's. He throught they were junk. He gave one to me and I painted the shell silver to make it an instant officers badge.
I think he wore it on his beret until he retired from the military. Our thoughts at the time were that the badge was so cheap he could afford to either lose it or have it stolen! Maybe I should reaquire it He still has it and I'll take some pics when I see him during the CSSMI convention in a couple weeks. I'm familiar with the L&W, RCRs but what other regiments rec'd an issue of these? Cheers, Greg |

19th Alberta Dragoons - Staybrite
Here is an unusual staybrite cap badge to the 19th Alberta Dragoons.
It is marked "SCULLY" just underneath the top lug. I do not know when the badge was worn, but there may have been a cadet corps in existence, even after the militia regiment was placed on the Supplementary Order of Battle in the 1960s. |
