Default WW1 soldier - help please!

Hi all,

I am trying to help out one family with their ancestor research but the first step is find out his branch where he served during the war. Unfortunately it is impossible to do with his name (one very common Irish name).
Therefore can some of you please help me with the insignia, period, etc that is possible to see on the picture.

Again, unfortunately I do not have better scan - that's all that was possible to get from large family picture.

Thanking you in advance,

Timo aka Phaethon

Looks like a Gunner in the Royal Regiment of Artillery with 2 Good Conduct badges (5 Years) on the left sleeve below the crossed flags of a Signaller. One of the Uniform buffs can possibly date it better than Post 1902 (introduction of RA Cap Badge).

If its on a postcard which it looks, and sat in a studio with the missus I would be confident to say its a typical WW1 card.

I would agree with Marc. He definitely looks like a Gunner, judging from the shape of the cap badge, and bandolier. Since he's wearing a bandolier, does that mean he was mounted, i.e. RHA?

No, The RFA and to some extent the RGA relied on horses as well to pull the guns.

He's wearing the economy tunic with stiff SD cap so photo taken during WW1, probably 1915 or 1916.
