A good pic, GS caps for all and plastic badges in the front row.

...and a plastic button for the featured soldier.

Possibly wearing an American made greatcoat? My ODWA greatcoat has such plastic buttons.

A great photo, looks like a guard duty is about to take place, as they all have Bulled up Boots as well, and they are still clean .....

Anyone notice the single item they are wearing on their right side epaulettes of their greatcoats ??

Maybe a shortage of titles going about at the time, so to make it look normal they all had to wear one only or

A coloured epaulette title to denote their "Training Company" worn only on the right epauplette.

The soldier in the enlargement: strangely ill matched straps on his small pack. On his right shoulder the standard L-shaped strap with brass hook, and something very different on his left shoulder. Was he last in the queue for webbing issues?

I think you are right, basic training.

Other than the points you raise, wasn't there a different sort of ammunition pouch worn by a soldier who drove a lorry?

That is if they wore a pouch at all.

Possibly Sufton Court, Herefordshire - a stately home probably requisitioned in the Second World War for military use?

A very late war, or possibly just post war, photo given that two of the standing men have pouches with quick release fasteners rather than press studs.
