Yes they were worn both before, during and after WW1 and during WW2 regards.

I believe its G1 meaning Grade One, a qualification given to female members of detachments. Grade 1 in what though? I dont know.
Only worn on the shoulder strap on outdoor uniform, ie jacket or greatcoat. regards

"On each epaulette are brass titles ;'G1' shows that she has the BRC Grade 1 qualification." Excellent photo in book show a VAD nurse in British Red Cross Society dark blue 'outdoor' uniform with numerous badges/titles. .

Unfortunately, the wartime uniforms of the Red Cross and St John organisations are some of the least recorded/published in books, making it very difficult to determine what is pre-war/wartime/post-war.
