Default Grenadier Guards Badge variations

Guys,

Can anyone tell me if there is any reason for having a shank or lugs? My great grandfathers effects had two G.gds badges, one has a shank and the other lugs, but why? He was a war time enlistment in 1914, not a regular, he never did ceremonial afaik.... so would one be for the stiff guards cap, the other for the soft trench cap?

Or is there no rhyme nor reason...

Tom
