A hole in slider !
This is the first time I see a hole in a slider... Does anyone seen the same thing on a slider ?
This badge come from Dunkirk's beaches and was found in years 90's. This cap badge Worcestershire is still with sand...and was lost 60 years before ! |

I have heard two theories for this phenomenon.
(1) They were the badges attached to the Sealed Pattern card with string threaded through and joined by an official seal. Well, I've looked at a lot of these in various museums and I think only one had its string through a hole. (2) They were made so that the slider could be stitched to the inside of a side cap or a general service cap (precursor of the beret). Certainly logical as a slider moved about in these partticular headdreses. It could be both reasons but the latter is probably more common. I have a badge which has the scar of a slider and two crude lugs soldered on instead - coping with the same problem I think. (anyway, I'm after a Kings Regt badge with a hole through it's slider if anyone sees one !) |

It's SASC, (Small Arms School Corps) but the same question remains about the hole although as ex REME I did drill a hole in more than a few RA badges in my time so that they could be stitched into berets .

No Rob, those badges regretably had their sliders or lugs removed and they were mailed through the actual badge - I have a couple, I'll find and scan them later. A hole through the slider like this one would not have held the badge flush to a board !
54, it wasn't that one but another from the same source ! Anyway, we now seem to have good evidence that both reasons I suggested actually occured ! |
