And this is ...??
I know it's a hat with a bullion badge on a metal backing. Looks to be very modern here?
Have seen similar style in older pictures ,etc. Can someone elaborate for me please ? Cheers ! Steve(NZ) |

Thanks guys !
Do we know when/if the HLI wore this style of hat ? Not recorded in the WW2 lists ? This particular item has never been, 'worn in anger'. Is like brand new. HLI & RSF merger was in 1959 ?? But seems to be for HLI only here. The badge is very peculiar,to me anyway, being bullion/cloth on a metal backing (shaped as the badge)plate with 2 lugs. Confused, a little ! See MHS Special Number 2002 " Coloured Field Service Caps- Infantry" by DG Glover page 53.
Highland Light Infanrty Torin cap- Officers 1st Battalion 1881-95 seems to be exactly as the cap the subject of this thread- Curtain, Body and Crown- all dark green. Seams of curtain and crown piped with cherry tubular braid. Badge composed of "HLI" monogram ensigned by crown " P.B.

It looks remarkably "new"? You might want to do the old "Burn Test" on the Nylon looking material on the edge of the opening....... find a loose thread on the material....... burn it with a lighter and if it smells like burning plastic and you see the thread form a ball then ....... think modern copy. Obviously Nylon was not around in those days

The cap could not possibly be original, I am afraid. The construction and appearance original Torin caps that I have seen is different. Aside from that, there is no way it could look as new as that after roughly 120 years!

It also has a Kings Crown cap badge.
