Default Service terminology.

Can any please give me a clue as to where I should begin to research an item with the following inscription?

201 Tideswell Mess. F.O.S. Presented to P.C. Comp. D. Wright in appreciation of 27 years as Mess Secretary.

Tideswell is a place in Derbyshire but the item might not be Derbyshire related.

Could it be a Fire Brigade rather than a Military item? What is a P.C. Comp?

Now you know what I face trying to interpret some of the "posts" on this forum. And I know I'm not alone!

Dave.

I would suggest a detachment of 201 Squadon ATC, based in Macclesfield.

What is the item?

regards

How does F.O.S. tie in with the Air Training Corps?

The item is an E.P.N.S, dish given as a retirement present that turned up at the boot sale this morning.

But what?

I have not been able to find any link between Macclesfield and Tideswell and therefore I am completely unsure why they wouldn't have had a Macclesfield Mess.

Does the A.T.C. not organise itself into Squadrons rather than Messes?

I still have no idea what the rank P.C. Comp. refers to.

Any rough idea about how old the dish is ? Could it be related to the original 201 Squadron , which was based at Kinloss in Scotland until it was disbanded in May 2011.

F.O.S - Flight Operations Support ?

FOS is Fellowship of the Services. It was an ex services organisation whose branches were referred to as Messes, their rituals were faintly Masonic and I suspect that P C Comp may be a title such as Past Chairman Companion
.hope that helps

Sadly, it is undated. There are also too many D. Wrights to began a meaningful search.

Brilliant Paul,

that was very helpful indeed. Are they likely to have left any records behind?

Simon.
