Flying cat and snake...military or ???
Hello Folks this has been in my unidentified box for some time,it originally came in a box oddments,it doesnt appear to have had any type of fixing on the reverse . I like it a lot...just wish i knew more of its history or what the cat with wings eating the serpent is representing.
Anybody have any ideas ? much googling has led me nowhere Tia DSC00330.jpg |

I have something very similar in my collection, it do not think that is military. I think that it has a religious symbolism. I think that yours may be the winged lion of St Mark fighting the devil in the form of a serpent.
Here is my example. Last edited by High Wood; 14-10-19 at 10:49 AM. |

Perhaps a modern take on a medieval pilgrim's badge? Quite an attractive piece of jewellery.

Mine was dug up. It also has a slider attached for wearing in a cap or on a pouch.

It's a griffin eating a snake. A well known medieval image / myth - can't remember where I saw it - I'll ask my medieval colleagues !

Thank you for the info it appears we have a left and right facing pair although mine is minus the slider and whilst doing some more googling i stumbled on this which i was unaware of and have just spent 30 minutes enjoying the wood carvings and explanations about which regiments were stationed in Danbury during WW1..still no nearer finding out what it is/was but im sure one day i will

You are of course correct, it is a griffin and not the winged lion of St Mark as I described it.
