Thanks all for your input.

Consensus seems to be that it is genuine (phew!), but not forage cap.

I will see if I can get it into the MHS badge identifier section of their magazine and see if anyone there can offer any further info. Will report back..

The loops fixture does imply a field service cap rather than a forage cap, and the superior gilt finish suggests either sergeant quality insignia, or perhaps the band as mentioned above, as the latter were entitled to more superior quality clothing than ordinary rank and file. It would also explain a badge issued in small numbers and probably purchased by the regiment.

I've been in touch with the MHS and there should be a short piece going in the February edition of their Bulletin, so let's see what develops then.
