Default Traffic Armband

Hi All,

I picked this up on eBay last week, it was advertised as a WW2 military police armband but having now looked in redcap collectables I'm pretty sure it's not.

Can anyone identify what it is?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

Hi Michael,

I collect traffic police insignia as a side line but generally only to those in the Western Cape, South Africa. The traffic control was taken over by the Municipalities form the SA Police in 1932 and before the new officers were issued with uniforms, each man wore a white coat. A red armlet with the letters “C.C.C. Traffic” work in black, will serve for identification.

The CCC here stands for 'Cape City Council', but I suspect they got the idea of the armband from another traffic service in the the commonwealth, so that may explain your armband.

Regards
Steven

Hello Michael,

Traffic Control, I'm certain it was a provost responsibility, the letters TC may also have been worn. Will look through some notes.

Thanks a lot for the help Gents,

I know traffic control was definitely down to the CMP, they wore a blue diamond patch on both arms with TC in red and their steel helmets had a white band on them rather than the red band for provost duties or the blue band for vulnerable points.

According to redcap collectables the correct armband was white with the letters TC in black and then it was replaced by a black armband with traffic in red letters (so the reverse of mine).

Someone has suggested the one I have may be RAF but I think they were just guessing with that.

Thanks again,

Michael

Hi All,

I've been looking at some of armband man's albums and I'm thinking this looks similar in design to some of the staff officer ones he has:

I don't know anything about the various staff branches, could that be what this is, any thoughts?

Michael

Not much help with who wore it but it is listed in the Catalogue of Clothing and Necessaries 1949 Section CB as CB0036

Thanks Sean, so it's a mystery of old then, yours looks pretty much identical to mine.

Thanks Tim, it confirms it is an official issue item and not something that was home made. Someone must know.

Hi all I know I'm a bit late coming to this as I have been away, I can conclude RAF
I have attached photos of mine recently purchased, also this one is a sealed pattern. I have also got one red letters on black I thought was Military Police but now have second thoughts possibly earlier than the red example
