Hi Chris

There is an example of the LDYPAO "Timmings" badge in my LDYPAO Post

Its the infamous "Flat" badge (Yuck!)

Have you got the production dates etc?

Default LDYPAO A/A

Hi Chris

Here is the “H.W.TIMINGS LTD B’HAM” LDYPAO AA Badge.

It is identical to the post 1970 JR Gaunt….. I reckon it’s the same die purchased by Timings from Gaunts. The back of the badge is different …. But the face of the badge is exact….. in fact I prefer it to the Gaunts “Dazzler”…. Timings made this one less bright.

Slider width = 5.6mm; Length = 38.6mm; thickness = 1.6mm

Griff,

When you say that it is identical to the Gaunt version can you show where similarities in die flaws etc. from both marked badges exist.

If you could put both badges side by side and post here then that may help also.

Regards

Chris

Hi Chris

Compare it to the "Dazzler" by Gaunt. (do you think they sub contracted work for Gaunt?)

Hi Griff,

These badges (I'm assuming the 1963 is the Timings and the 1970 the Gaunt) are from two very different dies or am I missing something here?

Regards

Chris

Sorry if you go back to my post you will see the 1963 is the Gaunt London and the 1970 is the Gaunt B'ham (Dazzler). Compare the Dazzler to the Timings.

Yes, they look similar - while not common the same dies being used by different companies is not unknown.

You may even find that the Timings badge was made by Gaunt for a customer who asked for a Timings mark!

Hi 54 Bty,

Could be but I think the marks were added after they left the factory.

I'm unable to confirm this yet though as I need an example 'in hand' to look at properly.

For good badges maker marks were added to the slider before anodising and colouring as denoted by:

a) sometimes found on the reverse of the slider where access after assembly would be impossible for a punch
b) absence of damage to the anodic crust which would have been created by the maker mark punch strike
c) recessed character areas having the same colour as the slider and not exhibiting raw aluminium

An East Yorks came my way via photos on the weekend and I was not happy with it as the slider and manufacturer's mark did not reconcile.

Also some other factors of these dodgy badges did not look those attributed to the company they are purporting to have come from.

It came from a box load all wrapped in tissue or crepe paper from someone I have been investigating for some time now.

The issue is what other items are out there like this - hopefully they will be easy to spot and I now think I know what I'm looking for.

Regards

Chris
