Default NZ Artillery Badge "QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT"

Hi Team

I'm looking to ID the era this NZ Artilley Cap badge was used.

Its a broach back so would this have been used pre lug issued?

Also what years were the motto "QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT" used.

cheers

Phill

Found this:

Quote:
The proposed design for a badge for New Zealand Artillery units was approved by Lieutenant General Godley, G.O.C., New Zealand Military Forces on 10 July 1911: 'Artillery. The G.O.C. desires that there should be one badge for all Batteries and Companies as follows: Hat or Cap. - Gun surmounted by the letters "N.Z." and a Crown. Motto "Quo fas et gloria ducunt" at base. Collar badgers.- Artillery grenade only.'

Base / Scroll to right (rear) you can clearly see remains of the fixing “Blade” not so clear to the left, and possibly one just under the Crown on top scroll, so presumably an Officer’s badge? does the badge show an Officer’s quality, looks to be O/R,s.
All the best Billy

Thanks for the replies guys.

I came across another site that had this badge as pre 1911 and thinking this style with the broach back was from that era.

cheers

hi Phil
the brooch back isnt military and has been added at a later date.
as Billy mentioned, it does appear that it may have originally had blade fixings and given the position of the remnants of one, may suggest 3 blades.
i think as Mike mentioned this post 1911

cheers

Thanks BC for clarifying

Metal badges are not my area and going back over what billy mentioned and regarding the back and Mike's post , this makes sense to be post 1911/ WWI era but with a later added civilian broach pin.

What would the reasons be for adding a broach pin?

For reuse or sweat heart momento?

cheers for all the input , always learning.

Phill

Mike, If the order to place N.Z on the upper scroll came in 1911, what was worn before? You’ll see in my New Zealand album, I have an OR’s helmet plate with UBIQUE on the scroll. (Did somebody get s**t for that?). I also have a cap badge placed before the N.Z badges. Guess I’ll have to re-title that one. Cheers D.J.

Not my area but did a bit of digging , all I could find about the helmet plate is that it was post 1902 and would assume that was based on it having a K.C. ?

Info on a lot of NZ Artillery badges on this page :

https://www.jsmilitaria.com/nz-vol-badges.html

As for the cap badge , a 'lot' of NZ badges (including Artillery) shows cap badges with UBIQUE top scroll and ROYAL N.Z. ARTILLERY bottom scroll (see photo) with a date of 15/10/1902 but most sites date this badge to 1947 ?

https://www.olympiaauctions.com/sale...18/view-lot/6/

From I.W.M :

Quote:
Since some time after 1902 there had been a small artillery element to the Permanent / Active Force, designated The Regiment of Royal New Zealand Artillery. Following WW1 the volunteer / Territorial artillery was renamed the Regiment of New Zealand Artillery. On 9 January 1947 this Rgt. of NZA amalgamated with the Rgt. of Royal NZA to form the Royal New Zealand Artillery. In 1958 the name changed again to become the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery.

The badge you have posted was generally worn from 1911 to 1947, the badge with 'RNZA' in the top scroll was generally worn from 1902 to 1947, from 1947 the smaller beret gun badge was usually worn.

From 1902 to 1911, the NZ Field artillery generic gun badge or individual unit gun badges such as "A", "B", "E" Battery, No.1 Coy and others were worn.

Adding a broach pin was often done post war or service, for wear on civilian dress.

The original 1911 badge design submitted by the officer commanding "G" Battery (Hamilton). The notations/ammendments are initialled "AG" (Alexander Godley)

I also have copies of the other district artillery badge designs.
