WM rising sun
An interesting badge.
There are lots of ACMF collar sized badges around in both WM and StgSil, by many different makers. I have a Luke collar badge in both WM and Stgsil (the nurses' ones) but only one genuine ACMF hat badge, this one by Stokes, with a collar pair. Surely if it is ACMF it is must be pre-war? In 1954 the Arm'd Corps would have worn the post-war pattern AMF rising sun. I have an Amor and a Luke and have been looking for a Stokes (in vain), not sure if it exists. I think I have a spare AMF Luke in WM if anyone is interested in an exchange for something. The question also arises who wore these AMF badges in oxidised finish because I have seen a couple of these and was told they were worn by recruits. I have another ACMF hat badge by Arendsen which looks like a more recent plating job. About 20 years ago a disposal store near Central Railway station in Sydney (long gone, not the dealers there now) had a lot of plated WM hat badges which someone presumably bought. I didn't buy one, but my Arendsen badge might be one of these. |

what size is the badge we are discussing? the pic at the start of this thread looks like a hat size badge, not collar size. the only unit i can think of that would have worn this badge is armoured corps. nurses didnt wear hat size badges as they didnt wear slouch hats at this time. again, the date of this particular badge is 1948-52ish. i have and have seen the collar size badges worn by nurses as cape and cap badge in silver plate, stg silver and white metal and probably chrome plated. from memory, they all have pin attachments bc |

taken from website
"the Commander 4 Australian Armoured Brigade, BRIG D. Macarthur Onslow recommended that a chrome plated Commonwealth (Rising Sun) hat badge be worn by Armoured Corps personnel on the Black Beret instead of the ordinary copper oxidised badge.
This, he said, would give the Corps a distinctive badge which would also serve as a link with the other Armoured Corps in British Commonwealth Forces which all wore a silver badge. The proposal was approved in 1945. The Black Beret has been worn by Royal Australian Armoured Corps troops since 1948 on parade and ceremonial duties, in barracks and also out bush on operations. It continues to be worn to this day, however during during the 1990s (circa 1992) the slouch hat with emu plumes was adopted for parades and ceremonial occasions due to the greater protection offered against the sun." taken from website http://archive.aweber.com/regimental...er_s_Call_.htm it is hat badge size |

I've got a document in the form of a letter from a digger who served in 1AR during the late 1940s which mentions the issue of a chrome rising sun badge.
Will have to try and find it. Mick

The badge was worn by 1st Armoured Regiment soldiers until it was replaced by the 1st Armoured Regiment badge around 1953 or 1954. I am looking at a picture from 1952 with some 1AR diggers wearing this badge.
Not sure what else these experts or the AWM can add to it. I have my doubts about the AWM's expertise in relation to some Australian insignia. I have seen plenty of incorrect/inaccurate descriptions on the AWM website about insignia. Not overly rare (500-600 in the regiment at the time - 1 hat badge issued to each soldier at least). Mick

I was told by an ex servicemen that had one then misplaced one of these badges, the silver rising sun badges had to be handed in to get the new/current badge approx 1954 , They were then destroyed .
Also I had a reply back from the DF late today confirming the story. There are none others that exist that I have been made aware of, also confirmed by DF I really don't know what you would call a badge that only one/maybe a few exist ? Last edited by australia; 19-06-12 at 08:59 AM. |

Why do you say only a few exist?
If each member of the regiment only got one badge than at least 500-600 would exist. Now, unless they were all destroyed or something like that then maybe only a small handful would exist. I have seen these before so others do exist. Mick

Your badge you showed at the start of this post is not silver, but nickel or chrome plated. Therefore even if armoured wore a silver badge for a one off event, this is not it and if it was the silver badge worn for the queens visit, why does it have the wrong title in scroll and wrong crown? Mick is 100% correct in what he has said in the quote above re the badge and AWM. I have several of these badges. Just pulled 2 out of the boxes for example. You can see one is like yours (no makers name) the other being a Luke made badge with the changed title but still pre queens crown. bc and another 2 pictured here http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=37123 Last edited by badgecollector; 19-06-12 at 07:51 AM. |

I will dig them out and take some pics shortly. Your badge is the chromed version of the period immediately post ww2, 1946-50ish. And as far as I am aware, only armoured corps wore the white metal or chrome or nickel plated hat sized badge. The pics I showed also included the 1950-53ish new title and crown version, before changing to QE2 crown. Your badge does not relate to the queens visit at all BC |

Update
"Quoted from DF email Today 21/6/2010"
""Regarding the silver rising sun badge as far as I know the nickel plated or silver rising suns were used by some army bands, light horse units that did not have a specific light horse badge and some Cav /armoured regiments, the nurses usually wore a collar size rising sun, during the period between 1904-1912 the army admin and instructional corp also wore an actual sterling silver rising sun hat & collars I hope this is of some help,"" they are still in the process of gathering more information , regards |
