Essex County Division patches,2 Patterns
© IWM (INS 6511)
© IWM (INS 6513) One authority (Morris) says this was a second pattern of the County Divisional sign. Essex County Division was formed 18 February 1941 by redesignation of the West Sussex County Division. At this time the existing Sussex Martlet badge was abandoned and this new badge adopted. Essex County Division was itself disbanded 7 October 1941. Although heraldic in origin, some examples of this badge have been seen with the orientation of the seaxe hilts to the right. The same basic design was adopted by both 223rd Independent Infantry Brigade and 28th Searchlight Regiment. The Brigade sign had blue seaxes on a red ground and the regimental sign had red seaxes on a blue ground.

Essex
Oh the confusion over Essex seaxes formation signs. I'm content that the first one is an Essex County Division FS, but have yet to confirm the second. If someone can post a photo of it in use... I have suspected that the version with ESSEX may be Scouts as FS were not supposed to have a name on them.
Looking forward to future contributions to this thread. Stephen. |

From memory, No.2 does appear to be Scouts,
