What have we here? No 12.
LAC is an awsome resource for images. Here is a photo taken in early 1944. Some great uniform details.

Hello Bill. I wonder if the the Pay Corps (a very important job in the army) private is wearing a maroon beret (can't really tell in a B/W pic) and, if he's wearing the Para wings?????.

He is actually a captain - THE PAYMASTER. A pretty important man since I believe many of the soldiers went to the Para battalion because of the higher pay!
I am wondering if he shows up in any of the books on 1 Can Para. Phil |

Hi Jo, I believe he was entitled to wear the maroon beret. The LAC caption is wrong for this image. The RCAPC fellow is a Capt as can be clearly seen on his epaulette. The sergeants appear to be wearing the plastic issue cap badge.

Well Gents, I guess I need to change glasses or pay more attention to details. Still, would the Capt. would be jump qualified. I guess yes, since he's wearing US jump boots.

Growing up in Hollywood North (Vancouver) I spent some time on movie and television show sets. I can't view anything anymore without looking for 'things'.
In my opinion, there is no big suprise how well we can see rank and insignia in a lot of these photos. They have been staged quite nicely. I swear, my grandfather's studio photo in Berlin in '45 must have been near impossible for him. The way his head and arm are situated (to better see his insignia) must have actually hurt ;-) |
