Hi BC,
As you probably know, the NZ Pioneer badge is the most faked NZ badge, and my usual rule of thumb is, if it is not made by Gaunt be suspicious. I have lots of original brass and bronze Pioneer badge pics in my files, but sadly none match your cap or collar badges. I am interested to hear other opinions. Brent |

hi Brent
im genuinely surprised that you question the larger of the badges. beautifully made with what looks to be a gilt wash over it. dont think you can fake that type of gilt having said this, i am definitely no expert on NZ badges i also looking forward to hearing from others bc |

I too am not an expert, but I am observant and do have a tendency to question most things.
lets face it, fake Pioneer cap badges exist in both cast and die stamped from original dies, some Pioneer fakes contain maker marks and many have no markings, some fakes have sliders and others have lugs. If you had a Gaunt tag hidden by the lug on the left of your cap badge, I would be ready to buy into its originality, but yours appears to have no maker mark which is a rare beast indeed. I do know there are a couple of forum members who collect Pioneer variations, hopefully they will join the conversation. Heres one of my favourites, just love the W/l\D mark. |
