Default The Welsh Regiment

Unusual in my experience to see a group with some in belts and with bayonets fixed. Has Pembroke dock photographers stamp on the reverse and the Welsh regiment in pencil, but no idea which Bn.

Hi Jerry,

Perhaps you can see the shoulder titles under an eyeglass. It looks like a territorial battalion, 4th, 5th or 6th Welsh? The third chap from the left, in the second row from the front is showing a clear view of the title on his right shoulder.

Cheers,
Jack

Hi Jack, sadly they are not as clear as I had hoped and I have already tried looking. Interestingly there seems to be more than one form of title in wear. The sergeant might have 4 above Welsh on his.

Jerry I think that the sergeant has cut the ends off his T to show that he was 1st/4th Welsh (i.e. the 'first-line' battalion). This was quite a common practice in some regiments as the war went on.

Thanks mate for chipping in, you could be correct, sadly the picture is just not quite sharp enough to see for certain.

The Barracks in Pembroke dock was Llanion Barracks , I was there in 1962-3 and it seems that
1911 2nd Battalion, The Welsh Regiment arrived on their fifth tour marching into (The Old Agamemnons) Llanion Barracks from where, later in the year they were ordered to Liverpool to assist the civil powers during the national rail strike.
1919 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Welsh Regiment. The first Btn. consisted of just 5 (The invalids) and (The Old Agamemnons) Officers and 35 men.

I would hazard a guess that this was the 2nd Battalion simply based on numbers

Having seen such titles quite a few times I am fairly confident from the appearance of the titles that 'clipping' has taken place. By 1919 the men were quite mixed up within units and it is not at all impossible that it is a 2nd Battalion group that includes men who previously had served in other battalions.

Interesting if it is the 2nd Bn in 1919.
