WW1 Medal Index Card
not a badge question "per se" but.....................
when a soldier was issued with his campaign medals, were the regimental details impressed onto the medal, the initial regiment / corps etc. he served with ? it would appear from service records that soldiers were, for whatever reason, transferred to other units. unfortunately, I do not possess my Grandfather's trio but I do have photographs of him and they show that he was in two different regiments. one of the photos shows him when he first enlisted, a fresh faced youth in the Kings Regiment. one of the others taken later in the war , shows a man that has gone through the mill, a drained, weary looking member of the Cheshire Regiment. |

Hello SW
There is a great expertise on service and medal entitlement on the Great War Forum http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/ |

"WW1 medals were named to the soldier in whichever unit he first served overseas and should be named in the highest rank tha they served in in a theatre of war."
The exception being the 14/15 star which should be in the rank held at the time of qualification. |
