18th century Malta dug buttons
Sharing a few of the type of buttons dug locally.
I hope that perhaps any French naval expert in the Forum may add further information. All buttons relate to the period of The Knights of Malta (Order of St John).
1. Button worn by the armed forces of the Order, very likely the Malta Regiment (Reggimento di Malta), 1776-1798. Brass, 17mm.
2. Button worn by senior French naval officers, last quarter of 18th century. Most likely a relic of the French Occupation (1798-1800). Gilt, 16mm.
3. Button of type that would have been worn by French privateers/corsairs, 1772-1789. It has also been attributed to use by the Navy of the Order, which was renowned for corsairing against infidel ships. Brass, 17mm.
As always, comments or additional info most welcome.
