Thanks for that confirmation, thats really great info and why these forums are sources of amazing info ....and sadly some abuse them.

Frank I checked up in Tyldens and it is recorded there that "Ons Is" is literally "We Are".

In Springboks in Armour Harry Klein records that the original SATC badge was the common SA General Service badge.

Hello Brian,
No problem, that is what a forum should be about, you will find that title in your own country I am sure, in due course.
I think, from memory, Tylden suggested it could be interpreted as "We're it" did he not? that has stuck in my memory ever since I read it, but, it was many years ago now, I was still at school, I just thought it sounded so bloody cocky, but then they had just given the "macaroni" a good hard thrashing!
I have not read Klein and I would not be at all surprised with the General Service badge, the founder members of the corps must have arrived wearing something, but, I do like those early tank badges.
There was a version made in copper rather than brass, with or without the bronze finish, which I know I don't have, but, they are not really that easy to find anymore.

Yes, they were bought in South Africa in about 1978 or 79.
A long time ago now anyway!
Would you like to see that 8th Army flash I mentioned, I bought it the other week with that white metal "Ons is" badge in my first post in this thread.

Here's an old friend Iain, I've had this since I was a small boy, I've always thought the repair to be a contempary one, what do you think?

I bought it because it was a bullion example of the "crusader's cross" it's a bit grubby and worn ,but, I still quite like it!
That orange fabric that the Union Defence Force used is always prone to moth too, but, again I quite like this sort of thing, I wish it could talk!

The lugs are different to my own one which has conventional lugs.
The repair appears to be an old repair.

I actually saw one of these for sale the other day but not sure if it was the bullion version like yours.
A lot of SA cloth badges use that fabric and are often moth eaten.

I wish they could talk, some might tell of their owner's adventures in the desert at Sidi Rezegh etc!

It would be interesting, there were some desperate times in the Western desert, I often think the same of WWI badges.
