Hi Guys
Yes, there are some I have never seen before in lead cast, updated my original post with the relevant details. The RLI is very delicate being rather thin, it is amazing it has lasted 67 odd years! Appologies for not naming them before. Glad you like the post! Brian Last edited by Brian Conyngham; 31-03-12 at 06:32 PM. |

Some more join the cast collection!
Hi Guys
Swapped out a few of my "spares" for these WW2 lead and bronze cast SA Badges. The SA Irish and 1st City are lead with a silver wash and the "Buck in a Porthole" with crown is lead with a bronze wash, all three in very good condition for their age. Previous owner sadly scratched the reverse of the SA Irish badge as he was curious to find out what metal it was made of. Brian Last edited by Brian Conyngham; 20-12-12 at 06:54 PM. |

To Brian C. I'm just wondering if all of us who have Cast badges could upload them into ONE gallery. Then those who wish to compare what they have, could go to one community gallery of "Cast Badges" to see what has been discovered. I direct this to you as an idea because you seem to have a large number of them. I've never posted a gallery because quite frankly I'm rather computer illiterate. you have seen my cast THA and I do have some others (Singapore, Ceylon and Sri-Lanka as well as Indian Artillery. Could the "Moderators" set this up? If they could and allow each picture donor to be credited, I feel it might benefit the forum......All the best, David J.

The Idea of one gallery for these is a good idea. A new social group perhaps? Andy Last edited by Nozzer; 17-02-18 at 10:25 PM. |

Hi All
Here is an interesting observation, two sand cast badges with identical construction.... the sliders are unique to the maker I would have thought? Images :- The 9th Lancer is in Canada BTW and the 17th/21st Lancer belongs to another forum member in the UK.

Hi Guys
David, I have sent a PM to Mike to consider your request, it is a great idea and think it will add historical value to these long overlooked badges. I have some info on the East African "firm" that made some of these, will try to find it. Sorry for the late reply but been squeezed for time of late. These were largely "made in the field" and definately worn in combat making them important. It is interesting to see the "common" sliders on some of the Brit badges posted examples with SA ones that also came from Egypt. Brian |

Hi All
Two of the same 17th/21st Lancers.... with tangs OSD and a more brass looking (service polished) with loops ...... guestimate late 1930s ( I have this version worn in berets - white metal/silver - in Greece 1945 by the Officers).

17th/21st my favourite badge of all time!
Great to see this cast example, very nice thanks for posting. Griff note the slider on this Durban Light Infantry badge, same as your 9th Lancers. This DLI example belonged to a great uncle of mine who served as a Sgt in the unit before being commisioned into the Q Services as a Capt. He did spent some time in Egypt, where I suspect this badge came from. Brian Last edited by Brian Conyngham; 09-01-13 at 06:25 PM. |

The images are a bit small but I can see what you mean.... Here is another image of a sand cast OSD (Firmin type) motto ..... very fine quality to the face of it.... a bit brittle as has been demonstrated in the break.
