Default 228th Battalion CEF Officer's

An unusual officer's 228th Battalion voided cap badge. The officer's pattern is usually found in an oxidized silver finish, not voided. The voiding on this badge is the only example that I have ever seen, and it may have been done by a jeweller.

That's a great looking badge, Bill. Never seen one like that either.

If it was privately voided, it certainly looks to be a professional job.

Are the other details identical to other officers' issues for the 228th?

Cheers,

Adam

I hate to say it but this badge appears to be part of the hoarde of genuine but enhanced badges that came in from Engalnd in 1991 through Marway . Many where sold many where returned and sent back over the pond, I still have a couple. I remember seeing the boards of these badges looking out at me and could not believe my eyes and it was to good to be true of course.

Default Officers cap and collars

Here is the image of the officer's cap and collars. These came from the estate of the medical officer of the 228th. For comparison with the voided pattern.
Paul has made an interesting point. "Enhancement" of authentic badges is not reproduction but certainly is "not as issued". There are many examples of contemporary or period enhancements, plus many examples of enhancement done long after the period of issue. How one views these badges is a difficult question. Establishing the time the change was done is obviously part of the answer. If the badge was enhanced for the collectors market and can be proven to be so, it is obviously exactly the same as a repro. If the badge is enhanced by a soldier at the time of wear or issue, it is not the same as a reproduction or fake. Establishing this will be the real problem.
One more issue for the collector to consider.

the enhancement was done 1988-1990 to decieve. Many of the badges have ended up in collections and are now accepted. As I had a good look at the hoarde and know how the voiding was done and the coating was applied your badge appears to be one of this lot but whatever it is what it is
