Default Sailor Sam Badge

Can anybody tell me more about a "Sailor Sam" badge associated with the South African Navy in WW2?

Example here:

https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-antiques...90910000478209

NB

That ad' has nothing to do with me. I just found it when trying to find out more about the example of the badge that I have.

I can't remember the details but I think they were sold to raise war funds?
Cheers,
Alex

Thanks to both for the reply.

Would the army and air force "characters" have had a name?
