Help with Drum Major's Tunic badges
Hi everyone, I should like to complete this Coldstream Guards tunic, which is missing the badges above the chevrons and on the shoulder straps. I understand its Drum Major from the chevrons, and that a drum badge is worn, but which type of badge? And there is something else stitched next to it. Any help appreciated. Douglas

The holes made in the tunic denote the use of metal drum badges. Probably anodised pair looking at the age of the jacket. Regards

The Drum in gold anodised and shoulder titles shown with brass backing plate. However, cloth titles replaced anodised when the SA80 rifle was introduced as it was found that carrying at slope arms damaged titles.
The Tunic has possibly been ‘messed about with”? Tim

Thanks very much, so it shouldnt have the cloth titles it has now- it should have metal ones. I added the cloth titles thinking they were missing. I havnt changed anything else. I will take these off and look for a metal set.

Thanks for your reply. The label is faded, but can mostly be read.

Douglas,
Believe this Number 2 dress jacket belonged to Drum Major Ossie Austin of the 1st Battalion. A great character and excellent Drum Major, believe he left the Battalion mid 1980's whilst at Caterham. If you Google his details you should find an image of him at the head of the Band somewhere. Simon. Last edited by Hawthorn; 16-07-20 at 06:32 AM. |
