RAF jacket - Ribbon
Hello All,
I have inherited this jacket, and would like to know the meaning of the ribbon? .. hope someone can help me. I would also like to know the age and model of the jacket and if there are collectors for this - and perhaps what value it represents. I will at a later point get more information of the owner / pilot. Thanks. |

If you can show any Tailors label or naming detail it would help identifying the original owner.

The rank may be for a Squadron Leader with the middle braid removed. The two stripes seem a bit far apart to me. Maybe try looking closely to see if there is evidence of an extra braid having beej sewn there.

1. sweating on his "scraper" but had to buy jacket before Gazetting, and then never promoted substantively. 2, SqnLdr braid removed for theatrical purpose 3. WgCdr braid ditto. 4, Self-tailored in theatre of war, in candlelight. |

Another scenario is for a Regular Sqn Ldr or Wg Cdr becoming a Reservist at Flt Lt rank. I was a serving Regular Wg Cdr that became a Sqn Ldr Full-Time Reserve (FTRS) - my No 1 uniform was re-ranked from Wg Cdr to Sqn Ldr. Oddly enough, I’m a Wg Cdr again now!
Alternatively, they have been given Acting rank, worn the Sqn Ldr rank for a a few months, and then never became Substantive before reverting back to Flt Lt. I think those scenarios are more likely than someone putting up the rank before being Gazetted, in my humble opinion. |
