can anyone else add to this?

Members of the 1st Armoured Regiment wore a silver coloured (probably nickel plated) oversize Rising Sun badge around 1948-1952 or thereabout.

G'day Aussie

See the next one its gone in twice. Yes its too late at night !!

Thanks for posting the photos.

Cossum shows a number of white metal and nickel plated rising suns but none made by KG Luke, this doesnot mean that lukes didnt also white metal ones, I think that it is probably a good one, well done. I must say that I dont think that I have seen a Wm one and certainly dont have one. However I do have 2 Silver nurses collar sized badges.

Regards

Phil.

I stand corrected , its chrome plated

"the Commander 4 Australian Armoured Brigade, BRIG D. Macarthur Onslow recommended that a chrome plated Commonwealth (Rising Sun) hat badge be worn by Armoured Corps personnel on the Black Beret instead of the ordinary copper oxidised badge.

This, he said, would give the Corps a distinctive badge which would also serve as a link with the other Armoured Corps in British Commonwealth Forces which all wore a silver badge. The proposal was approved in 1945.

The Black Beret has been worn by Royal Australian Armoured Corps troops since 1948 on parade and ceremonial duties, in barracks and also out bush on operations. It continues to be worn to this day, however during during the 1990s (circa 1992) the slouch hat with emu plumes was adopted for parades and ceremonial occasions due to the greater protection offered against the sun."

More then the Armoured Corps wore these

"Quoted from DF email Today 21/6/2012"

""Regarding the silver rising sun badge as far as I know the nickel plated or silver rising suns were used by some army bands, light horse units that did not have a specific light horse badge and some Cav /armoured regiments, the nurses usually wore a collar size rising sun, during the period between 1904-1912 the army admin and instructional corp also wore an actual sterling silver rising sun hat & collars I hope this is of some help,""

they are still in the process of gathering more information ,

JW

I believe its from the BCOF "British Commonwealth Occupation Force" 1945-1949

Below is a image from 1946, chrome badge present.

below is a image of The Squadron OC, Major Cec Ives, standing alongside a Staghound Armoured Car.

Further to the contributions in this thread:

A few years ago my brother-in-law, who lives in Melbourne and knows absolutely nothing about militaria (Australian or otherwise), bought me a slouch hat for my collection and sent it over. I immediately thought it was suspect but never commented negatively to him.

It has a chromed Rising Sun badge, similar to that depicted in Message 1 of this thread, and which I found puzzling. I've now been giving the hat a good checking and I believe he was 'done'! Possibly, any knowledgeable Forum member may be able to confirm or otherwise. I'm afraid I have no pics available at present, only a description.

1. Badge: Die-cast chrome, the back perfectly flat; KC, 'Australian Commonwealth Military Forces'; 2 small hairpin fasteners in lieu of normal single split-pin; stick-on label at back 'Mitchell's'.

2. Slouch hat: Khaki felt with lighter ribbed edging; no pugree or chinstrap; brown leather sweatband 'Arrow/Mountcastle 1994/Made in Australia/55'. Beneath the band is an inked name 'Tomlinson' (probably the previous owner).

Obviously, the badge and hat are out of synch with each other. But I'd very much welcome comments

Sounds like an Army Disposal Store rising sun badge. They were cast and some had lugs. Made for army disposal stores and never worn by the army.

Mitchells is also an Army Disposal Store in Sydney.

Unable to clearly scan back. It is flat, solid and rather heavy.
Label also priced ($10)

Mike, I would guess you could be right, but what exactly are these Disposals? Something like Army & Navy Surplus? Do they normally sell spurious items?
