Hi Mick, I have just bought a first pattern badge which is almost identical to yours. What I would like to Know is, have I got a collar or cap badge? The badge I have just aquired is approx the same size as later collar badges.

Best wishes Dave Moore.

Smile !st Patern Rising Sun Badges

G'day Dave

According to Jeff Cossum's book on rising sun badges the cap badge was 32mm, so it looks like its a cap although its about the same size as later collar badges. While have seen a few over many years, l have never seen a large one. If you have one they are a very rare badge ........... Congrats.

Regards

Phil.

Default Thanks

Thanks for your help, the badge is 32mm at its widest point and has a dark patina. It came from a very old collection, so I am confident in its authenticity.

Best wishes Dave Moore.

Hi Lancer 17, the 1st pattern badge is posted on my introduction page, I would value any opinion. I havn't mastered the camera yet so the image is not that close. In reality the bronzing appears lighter and is worn on high spots which isn't so apparent in the picture.

Best wishes Dave Moore.

I hate to burst the bubble but....its a collar badge.
Cossum describes the badge as 32 mm HIGH!!
1st Patt badges are a bit smaller than a standard RS hat badge, i.e 50mm LONG
Collars still sell on feebay for up to $300+ AU

Default 1st pattern rising sun collar badge

Hi, my badge is 24mm high, the rope at the base is 32mm wide and the greatest distance across the sun rays is 36mm. Despite the fact that it is a collar badge, it is still a wonderful badge, and I am pleased with it. It comes from a large collection which is being sold off slowly so the cap badge might appear. Thanks for your help.

Dave Moore.
