Thanks for all the replies so far. Yes, Alan, I find it odd that a restrike (if it is a restrike) should be made in a more complicated way than the original. And yes, the one I bought does seem a darker GM.

Your badge appears fine but the base of the loops look a bit iffy. |

WM Cinque Ports TF
Hi all,
There are a number of threads on the subject of GM Cinque Ports TF badges and some postings of WM versions. I am a little unclear as to the consensus as to when the WM version was worn. Julian notes that when the badge came to be made for the TF under AO 1st Aug 1916 it was GM version http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...t=cinque+ports. Hence is this clearly then a pre 1916 version but there is talk of Cinque Ports RV dies being used to make these badges looking at the scrolls etc. Mine is with lugs so is this earlier than a WM slider version as I would presume. K&K 1728 is ORs in GM and also in bronze with Officers ibut Cox notes that 1523 is in GM and WM with Officers in enamel or bronze as per K&K 1727. The auction archive of Dix Noonan Webb http://www.dnw.co.uk/medals/auctiona...o?itemid=56693 provides some more information with: Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteers, a scarce other ranks white metal cap badge, c1898-1908 (KK1728), two lugs; a very rare officer’s cap badge in bronze and enamels, c1900-14 (blades); another osd cap in bronze with applied central shield, c1900-1920 (blades), all as per (KK1728); 1st Cadets Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteers, a very scarce all white metal cap, pattern as per (KK1728) but bottom scroll reads ‘1st Cadets Cinque Ports’, slider, very good condition. So in my mind my badge is 1898-1908 in WM K&K 1728. Cheers Dean. |

Attached the pre-1908 Cinque Ports badges. My opinion is that the nickel post-1908 pattern are the earlier ones as well as those with 1st & RV obliterated. Last edited by Keith Blakeman; 23-02-13 at 09:11 AM. |

Cinque Ports badge
I have had this badge for a while and looking at my bits and pieces today, I thought I would put it on the forum for others opinions.
I have not seen a plethora of these online, in fact I have never seen another, the badge has a bronzed finish with the high points polished and a slider! The shield in the centre seems to be superimposed onto the badge as can be seen in the pic. I hope someone has some knowledge on this badge. Regards Rob |

Cinque Ports
Andy,
I have no idea where this badge came from, probably with a collection I bought a while back. Yes, I know it has a slider with a bronze finish which defies all logic regarding OSD badges, but it is well made IMO, with high points polished . . ! The fact that I have never seen another and wonder whether anyone else has intrigues me, why go to the trouble to make something that does not tick all the boxes? I have it as a curiosity on my Royal Sussex board and it will stay there until I have more information on it. Thank you for your opinion Andy, I hope others will follow your lead. Regards Rob |

Hi
Andy im not sure if its the angle of your photo of the rear of the badge you have in your link but the right hand side rear looks more depressed than the left making the badge unevenly struck Paul |
