2nd Gurkhas ?

So I bought this on spec - I'd not seen one before > I suspect it's an arm badge to the 2GR Bugle Major ? Or something similar ? And could anyone give me a rough date ?

Its a bugler arm badge. Pair of bugles indicates a rifle regiment and the Regimental device above.

Worn in the modern era.

"Just" a bugler ? Or Bugle Major ? I've seen sleeve badges for Gurkha musicians before with a single bugle - and cloth rather than metal .

A bugler, its a badge of appointment, its not a badge of rank.

Im not 100% sure that a Gurkha Bugle Major wore double bugles.
Certainly ,the cloth versions black on red and black on green are pretty scarce items.

So what's the difference between a single bugle arm badge and a double bugle with regimental crest above ?

A single bugle is a qualified bugler.
But not all Bugle Majors wear the double bugle badge. The Light Infantry didnt,stripes on both sleeves and a single bugle plus rank badge if applicable.

My boy is a bugler in his rifle battalion , he wears a single bugle cloth badge , so possibly a bugle major ? He wears a silver badge on his No1’s and green for his other uniform etc

As said, Rifles Regiments have traditionally used double bugles badges for the appointment of Bugle Major in any rank from Serjeant to Warrant Officer.

The Gurkha Rifles may follow this tradition but variance can be at a Commanding Officers discretion.

Yes, I can't remember what British Army Proficiency Badges" says re. the double bugles but I believe the RGJ editions of "The Regiment" show them worn by CO's and Adjee's Buglers?

Youve picked on the wrong one there Leigh.
The double bugle badge in RGJ pattern was originally the Bugle Majors badge.
But there were various other buglers badges for the CO,Adjutant and RSM with the appointment woven in. The badges then changed and the COs bugler wore the double bugle badge in the RGJ pattern.
The Bugle Majors then wore double bugles in gold thread in a gold wreath as shown on the front cover of one of the Regiment issues.
The Rifles and the LI also have/had various bugler appointment badges with the appointment woven in .
