Hi wardog,
Thanks very much for this link, most interesting.
I placed a query on the site:

Hi themonsstar and all,
Thanks very much for showing these pictures. I am curious about the crossed axes badge on the B1126 "Torin" cap.
Does anyone know it?
Thanks, Tinto

Can anyone help on this Forum?

Cheers, Tinto

I received this reply from Frogsmile:

Yes, it’s an officers badge of a British-Indian Army Pioneer Regiment.

Thanks, Frogsmile.
Cheers,
Tinto

There is also an Imperial Japanese Navy officer (B1004) cap badge in the bullion embroidered section included as well!

I think there are a couple of Forum people who have one or two of these 'trade catalogues'. The are quite a few at the NAM too - one I saw was dated 1904 (though I assume there were other editions).

I had an example of this book, I scanned it and put it in the album section several years ago.

i have had the same large size Gaunt catalogue for many years, obviously early 1900s. Many of the sample badges are QVC and it has a price catalogue which folded out at the back. Gaunts were not interested in the history of the badges, buttons, accoutrements etc, only the price for each grade and finish:
i.e.you could order the same item and the price varied with the quality.
The book deserves to be reprinted. Their "old and curious" badges and buttons
really ARE old and curious.
There is another thread somewhere in which I attached a scan of my Gaunt sample card from the same period which had badges and buttons attached with various grades and quality.

Thanks for sharing.

Again highlights the issues with pre-territorial glengarries, I can see the 4th, 82nd, 99th and 56th. Clearly Gaunt had at least some of their original dies and could/would ‘restrike’ to order in the early 1900s.

It would be interesting to see scans of the price list and identification from the pull out section the first link says they don't have the price list with their copy. I have once looked at one of these though and the button I was looking for when I did find the relevant page just listed it as old and curious.

The date is possibly circa 1897 as the Infantry Cap badges are in regimental seniroty order and show some newly introduced cap badges and some collar badges as worn on the field service caps. After 1989-99 the collar badges would not shown but the full sized cap badges.

That fact alone makes it a useful source.

My example had a couple of clues as to the date but it may have been updated from an earlier edition?

Rob
