Default 'Cockleshell Heroes' My uncle was there!

Well the making of the movie actually
Harold 'Podge' Overbury was stationed at Eastney when they made the film and got a speaking part. A great man who is still with us. Joined the Corp in 1939 and retired in 1970.
Just a couple of pictures of the great man himself .

Well done.
One of my favourite films that used to be shown at the camp cinema when I was a sprog - along with Stalag Luft 17...... He has done well to hang on in there.

He's mentioned in a number of sites if you Google him. Spent most of the war in Burma. The medals look good on one of my other uniforms.

Knew 'Podge' when I was but a young Junior Marine at ITCRM, Lympstone 1964. He was CSM 'X Troop' Training ... Firm but Fair. Several years later had the pleasure of sitting next to him at an RMA Dinner in Tavistock swinging the lamp.

He's still a great guy, just can't remember anything now
I go down and see him every now and then in Exmouth. He has some very good friends who keep an eye on him. Just turned 89!
Christmas he fell over in his living room and broke his shoulder, he was pissed, good man!! Spent Xmas in hospital.

That would be typical ! The drill instructors knew no bounds when it came to God's Little Acre - another favourite was to send a Recruit Squad clambering over the 8 feet wall around the Parade Ground in Best Blues and white gloves.

Irv - a reasonable compromise might be found on 'Fisher Paton and The Red Baron' site ... he's a former Royal Marine, produces what appears to be a goodish example.

Hello Irv

Great stuff!

Was your uncle in Brunei or Borneo? I see he has the NGSM, GSM and the PJM.

Any chance he was on the Albion? My Dad was a Stoker on "The Old Grey Ghost" and perhaps their paths crossed.........

All the best,

Andy

Hi Ritchie,
Just had a thought. Did you know Capt. R.V. Henry? Known as Vic.
