Fantastic pictures Bryan, from the little research I have done, I understand that the RNMBR was composed of a high percentage of Canadians. Has anyone else got any information about this, and if so was their a special reason?

Hi Dave & Bryan
Again interesting photographs. Note: 1. Full time naval personnel only wear full sets or are clean shaven, therefore the photograph of the Motor Boat Reserve CPO (MBR) must be one of the guys on hostilities only service (fishermen etc) I think it was T104 service, They were allowed to keep their face fungus above the lips. 2. The group photograph, of mostly CPO's as far as I can make out, shows in the rear row, two ratings wearing the red RNMBR cap badge ie not CPOs. One is wearing gold MM collar badges, hence confirmation of David's question regarding gold badges worn by ratings other than CPO's. I cannot make out what the other guy has. There also appears to be one CPO in the back row without collar badges. Possibly an artificer, since they did not wear badges. However, my eyesight may be a bit dodgy. Is it possible to have a copy of the photographs? John |

Hi Bryan
Sorry had another look at the guy in the rear row, who I thought was a CPO, it now looks just like a red badge. But can you make out if the red badges, of those who may not have collar badges, have RNMBR on them. Again if not they could be artificers. John |

Front row - The rating on left of photo is wearing the pre 1920 CPO gw cap badge, no rate badge. Next fellow is wearing same cap badge & gw MB rates on his lapels. Rating is centre is wearing same as first guy. Next two on right are same as number 2 but their cap badges appear to have the lettering (RNMBR) but not clear enough to make out precisely. Back row - Rating standing left is wearing gw cap badge & gw MB rates. The rating beside him is wearing the red class III cap badge, no rate badge, so as mentioned above, likely an Artificer. Number 3 appears to be wearing the same type of red Class III cap badge & gw MB rates on his lapel, so possibly not a CPO. Next (number 4) is wearing same as first rating on left. This one I can just make out the RNMBR lettering but its not clear to read precisely. Next (number 5) is same as number 2, again, an Artificer. The last one on right is same as number 3 (red class III cap badge & gw MB rates) None I can see are wearing any kind of distinguishing sleeve rates or ranks (which would be normal) except the rating front centre is wearing a War Service chevron on his lower right sleeve (& I thought these were worn on the left sleeve) So hopefully that will help. I will attach the shots below again & try to scan the photo & repost -- perhaps may be better than the camera shots below. Scanned photo is on the right...... On the way John, I sent two of the group photo -- one larger so you may be better able to make out the cap badges & rate badges better in the larger copy, & the smaller size also. Bryan |

getting a little off topic here but thought this one might be appropriate - perhaps might be a good idea to start a topic on RN "facial fungus"!! Bryan |

I am really pleased Peter, not only because they are nice badges, but also because of the amount of interest and information sharing which is occuring.
