Default RNR Officer cap badge

Further to Alco's topic on the NAV & NNV Officer's cap badges,
I thought I would show two circa WW1 era cap badges I have had for many years:

The first being the RNR Officer's cap badge:

Default RNCVR Officer's cap badge

& here is a really rare cap badge --- the RNCVR Officer's cap badge.

I will show it here is this topic as it kind of goes with the previous two badges shown.

The RNCVR was the Royal Naval Canadian Naval Reserve. This unit was the Canadian division of the RNVR, made up of ratings recruited in Canada.
Active time frame was 1914 to 1918 with the RNCVR being disbanded in early 1919, with the post war reduction of the Canadian Naval forces.

The terms RNCVR & RCNVR are somewhat confusing to collectors, and also for that matter, to so called "Official" Canadian government websites! ---

The RCNVR {Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve} was not formed until 1923.

Not this one Bryan. My grandfather served in the RNCVR from 1917-19 on patrol boats out of Halifax. He was not an officer and in spite of being born in Britain, he did not flock to join the forces until conscription was pending. He felt that the navy offered the best chances of survival. He was stranded in Quebec City in November 1917, thus missing the Mont Blanc explosion.
Somewhere I have a photo of him in uniform.

Bravo Zulu, Bryan !!!

You open a new gate (portal !) into my ignorance ...
I was not aware about the differences between these historical units :
- RNCVR (you certainly wanted to write 'Royal Naval Canadian VOLUNTEERS Reserve')
- and RCNVR from 1923 ... to 1946 ?

you should be right despite the fact that even the official site of the canadian Naval Reserve seems to ignore this historic subtility !

Superb cap, indeed - Is it your personal collection ?
hope to find such a magnifik badge !!!

Very good info - well done Bryan.

as it is difficult to really determine the colours (depending on the ambiant light ?) this badge seems to have gold anchor (and crown ?)
so should be a civil branch pattern ...

Or am I wrong ?

hello,

As per documentation, the RFR was only for CPO, PO, Seamen and Stokers ;
plus Royal Marines and NCO.

So NO officer in sight !

Details are given for uniform composition, but apparently no dedicated badge ...
sorry !

This site has errors Alco, they have missed the difference between RNCVR & RCNVR - its a common mistake on websites. The RCNVR Came into existance in 1923 & remained an active force until integrated with the RCNR after 2nd WW, the entire RCN being reorganized in the 1946-47 period. Both RCNR & RCNVR officers lost their distinctive "wavy" lace at that time as well. When the two reserves combined they became the RCN(R)

Yes Alco it is in my collection, I have several other items for this officer including his war medals. The cap, for its age, is in very good condition, the cap is black & has a white cover, the cover is showing signs of age at th top, which is understandable. I am only aware of one other RNCVR cap badge in a collection here in ON, Canada.

When I address the RNCVR in the RCN section I may post all of the items to this officer in future.

You are correct & I agree Alco, the RNR badge is definitely Executive branch as the Anchor is silver (its tarnished tho so might appear gold in the light), the embroidered crown is also in gold & silver as for the Executive branch.

But the RNV badge appears to be for the Civil branch, the anchor & embroidery is indeed gold, as is the crown.
The Civil branches of the RN were abolished, first in 1915 for the Engineer officers, & for all other branches (ie: Medical, Paymaster, Instructor etc) in 1918.

The RNV cap badge is Civil branch as in the above post, & it appears to be for an Engineer officer as the background colour appears to be purple, which was the branch colour for Engineering branch.
