Hi,

The A/A one is OK (can't comment on the others).

That is if it is A/A - if chrome then modern post 1993 and still OK.

Thanks Chris, I thought that one was good, it was one of the others I have a bit of concern over. Got the chrome one from a QDG cpl in 1999, so the dates fit as well.

Does the flat back or the manufacturer make the chromed badge post 1993?
(My hollow back Dowler. Birmingham QDG chrome was acquired from a retired senior NCO (not ex-QDG) along with a number of anodised aluminium badges to various units in June 1984.

Just a tip when asking for info on badges. Good photos and the right way up makes it easier to cast an eye over.

This is from my book:

"...A further find of the manufacturer’s mark ‘DOWLER. BIRMINGHAM’ (Mark 14.1) on a badge attached to a standard pattern card dated 30th June 1975 again suggests that the Dowler name was still in use past the 1969 Firmin & Sons acquisition date.

Evidence also exists of a relationship occurring between William Dowler & Sons and Smith & Wright Limited in the middle of the 1980s where Mr M. J. Tyler (Managing Director of the Shaw Munster Group at least into the late 2000s) was a director of both William Dowler & Sons and Smith & Wright Limited. Both these companies are noted in a letter that stated that all of Dowler’s old records were destroyed pre 17th July 1985. (6) With the addition of both William Dowler & Sons and Smith & Wright Limited to the stable of Firmin & Sons comes the probability that at one stage all three companies were being controlled by the same management, utilizing the same components, manufacturing processes and equipment...."



Suggest the badge is pre-1993.

Relief of the rear of the badge, as far as I know, makes no difference to age. Even recently manufactured badges still in official packaging may be found with rear of badges both flat and in relief.

Thanks, I just wondered, I knew QDG were wearing chrome back in the 80's (I haven't got the books to hand but know that they're mentioned in a couple of books (K&K, Gaylor? I'll check in a while) including a claim that the chromed badge was 1KDG, but just wondered if there was something about that particular badge in post no. 1 that indicated post 1993.

Hi Leigh,

Modern badges always difficult to sort out. LB&B is a relatively modern maker and the mark shown in post 1 is also found on A/A examples of this badge. As all officially authorised badges should have been A/A pre 1993 (as per official specification) then in non A/A it should be post this year when the spec changed from A/A to more modern metal. If I remember the very first post A/A badges were made in 1995.

Memtioned in Gaylor as worn by 1KDG & 1QDG.
Roger Vernon & Son dealers list no. 14 circa 1975 states worn by 1KDG 1953-58 (states white metal worn till 1952).
Bruntlet's dealers list of November 1988 states 1KDG.
Kipling & King states 1QDG.

Not very helpful I'm afraid.

The chromed badge was well known and a common enough known badge back in the 80's possibly 70's, it's just a pain that I can't remember much about them after 30-40 years and can't find any more notes that I made back then.
