Default RCAF Band Insignia

The badge you have shown was worn as a cap badge by RCAF Musicians.
I seem to remember them from my time in the RCN back in the pre integration period. The RCAF Central band was one fine sounding band!

I have attached photos of the type of rank insignia worn by the Musicians. Embroidered in gold wire similar to the gold wire chevrons worn by the RCN.

KC version.

I've seen photos of wartime bands and they have the standard RCAF ORs cap badges. There is a version of that (and tunic buttons) in chrome and white metal which are attributed to wartime, so I'd guess they came in after the war.

Although there had been a band formed prior to the war who had special dress uniforms for the visit of King George VI in 1939 I don't think these are the badges worn. There were also bands during the war, but afterwards three full time were formed: Central in Ottawa, Central Command in Trenton and North West Air Command in Edmonton. I suspect it was then that these began to appear.

The gold bullion rank badges for bandsmen were introduced then, which also makes me think the cap badges were introduced around the same time.

Bandsmen stuff can be funny.....I have a chromed RCAF Or's cap badge that is supposed to be the bandsman's badge. I have the RCAF dress regulations, and there is no mention of the RCAF Band until the 50's, although I know we had bands during wartime

Default RCAF Bandsman

In agreement with you Mike.
I had a group to a former RCAF Musician/Bandsman during the interwar period. He was in the Band at Station Trenton during the 1930's, he had been a prior Imperial Army Musician (I have forgotten his Reg't), came over here after the Great War & also had Army service during 2WW, serving overseas in the Canadian Army bands. I had a good photo of him wearing the RCAF uniform of the interwar period & I also had his chromed/plated metal cap badge as you mention in your post. Group unfortunately long gone & no photos saved.
I seem to recall the tunic was the high stand up collar type tho.

Here are a couple of shots of pre-SWW RCAF band members. Definitely wearing the standard RCAF OR's cap badge. The FWW medals indicate post-1921 and the Baldrick displays a George V cypher (although these remained in use after change of Sovereign).
