UNKNOWN USA NAVY BADGE ITEM

[4th N.Z ARMOURED BRIGADE]

Hi all I have had this item for many years itis made of silver thou not marked the centre is approx 60mm x 60mm.
I think it date from pre 1870.
It weighs approx 4 oz's.
Can any one shead some light on it's use.
