RCAF(?) Air Gunner Wing
Can anyone confirm that this Air Gunner wing is from the RCAF?
It's the usual RCAF pattern as worn during WW2 (with a crown, unlike the RAF AG wing). However, this example doesn,t have "RCAF" at the bottom. It has glue residue on the back, perhaps it was glued to a display board at some time, unless it was glued to the uniform! Any info much appreciated. |

David, it does look like an RCAF Air Gunner's brevet, although as you say, they usually have RCAF at the bottom. I looked in Warren Carroll's 'Wings. Canada & Great Britain 1913-1945' and all of the ones illustrated have RCAF at the bottom. There is an illustration on p.63 (c. Feb. 1943) showing 'Proposed Flying Badges' in which RCAF appears as a tab at the bottom, which could have been cut off, although the brown wreath is much thinner on all the brevets than those that were actually produced. Nor is there anything on the website 'Aviation Wings and Badges of WW2'.

It looks to be a British made version if the Canadian pattern wing, which has then had the 'RCAF' unpicked. It's not that uncommon. I have seen a number of wings like that, or with the lettering partially inked over.
