Helmet with odd paint job
Good day
This is a VW made helmet dated 1938 with a liner by VERO also dated 1938 but it has the oddest paint job I have ever seen. I'm assuming that it is just for theatrical/re-enactment show and was not a recognised military pattern? Many thanks |

I believe this style was used by the BEF in France/Belgium in 1940 but no doubt a helmet expert will be able to confirm - or not. The 1938 date would be right for that.

Having just read the Off Topic posts on abbreviations I should explain the BEF stands for British Expeditionary Force.

So not "Best Eaten Fresh" then?

Most of those who expressed an opinion consider that the vast majority of BEF used helmets were MKI*'s and would have had a textured exterior paint.
As the thread starter is a MKII it is unlikely to be from the BEF according to those who are more knowledgeable than me. Personally I doubt this is army used, home guard perhaps.

Does “VW” I the opening post (OP) stand for “Volkswagen” 😊

A close up of the markings would probably help answer your question but I assume VW is either a typo or a batch number.....
