Looks like an unfinished item which has not completed the manufacturing process. The "gash" metal surrounding the "rose" should, I would suggest, be cut away and then fittings (of some sort) added. The end of the process would involve the item being plated. Possibly cape fasteners??

Dave.

....what size is the Rose?

Derbyshire Yeomanry Cavalry

Officer's felt hat badge (2nd Boer War): A large rose in khaki-bronze matt finish paint (worn off the above example), 5cm in diameter. Worn with a stamen between two petals at top-centre. Approved 25th of August 1902 (KK1333).

Have measured them, they are 35mm in diameter. There is also no stamen. The flat outer part is too well shaped to be waste metal, although I agree it looks an unfinished badge.

Default Rose

With reference to the gash edging, seems strange that someone has gone to the trouble of leaving a specific shape on the right hand side?

Good call..... might explain the little fancy "pinch" extension at the top?

If it were a mould to pour in chocolate or something else then the detail would be on the inside? The inside is fairly plain with none of the exterior detail evident.

...is it one or two pieces John? Your photo makes it look like two? To me its an unfinished collar(s) ... possibly for the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry (DLOY)?

I wonder if it is part of a 2-piece badge that slots in from behind through a shaped opening? The lip around the badge to prevent it going all the way though and the fancy bit at the bottom to locate it properly.
Cheers,
Alex

I'd go with that Alex, shaped to slot in to something which may feature a garter surround to the rose?

Hi Griff, its actually an identical pair. I have to agree that they appear to be unfinished badges although what they are is beyond mt. The suggestion that they fit through another piece of the badge .appears a good one, the shape of the spare metal around the edge suggest a garter of some type.
