Default Irish cavalry: 8th Hussars, 4th Dragoon Guards WW1 and WW2 era

Hi Gents,

Here are 3 badges of Irish cavalry units: 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars and two badges for the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards WW1 era (apparantly the first British Cap Badge to encounter angry German troops in 1914) and one for the WW2-era. Comments most welcome. Thanks!

Cheers, Tom

I like the first 2 but not sure about the 4 RIDG, rear detail is quite poor.
Cheers,
Alex

Just from the photographs, I think the first two are okay, yes, that is true, it was Saturday the 22nd of August 1914, the 2nd Cavalry Brigade had sent some patrols well forward, C Squadron of the 4thDG were at Casteau, they had kept two troops at the ready for mounted action and the remaining two for dismounted action, when the enemy appeared, one of their Bandsmen fired the first shot of the Great War as far as the regiment was concerned.

Hi Frank, Thank you for your comments and the further historic expose - very interesting. Thanks for that! Cheers, Tom

Tom

the 8 KRIH does indeed look genuine. It is sealed pattern number (SPN) 4680a/1904, approved in 1904 and the pattern had a long life, existing all the way up until the regiment amalgamated with the 4th Hussars in 1958.

I see what Alex means about the back of the 4th RIDG but the slider looks good to me and I think this is genuine. This is SPN 4657/1898 and the (short) slider dates this from post c. 1906. This badge was worn until c. 1928/29. The other star is that of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards.

John

Hi John, Thanks for your contribution! Good to know.

Everybody happy with the 4/7 Dragoons? I was a bit worried about that one as it just looks so modern.

I really appreciate everyone's input which is helping me a lot! Thank you.
