Smile Badge collecting

Peter, these are a few of the things I try to do when collecting badges:-

When buying/receiving a badge make a note in a file about it:-

What the badge is, what it cost, who you bought/received it from and the date you bought it. I always give my badges a reference number which I keep in a folder.

This will help for future reference as you cannot always remember where a badge came from.

Happy collecting
Rob

Firstly welcome to the Forum. Secondly, as for your query you surely read and seen some amazing suggestions that the members put out there and I'm sure you feel overwhelmed. However since you have no particular regiment/period as of now, I would certainly go for the A4 cards or compartmental boxes. Once you narrow your collection, you would appreciate them more displayed in a frame on a wall for you to see and enjoy!

Regards,
Vincent

Oh boy, if I only had the discipline and foresight to do this....

Cool Badge collecting memories . . !

Although I have collected badges for over seventy years. I still have to look to my files to see where and when I bought them.

The other week whilst re-carding my Royal Irish Fusiliers badges a cap badge that was one piece with crown soldered above grenade broke, a badge I had been custodian for over fifty years, when I checked it out, bought for 1/9d (less than 10p) from one William Tobin, probably Britain's first full time militaria dealer.

The good news, I re-soldered it back to one-piece, a repaired item, but original and still on my Royal Irish Fusiliers board.

Remember, we are only custodians and all the records of our collecting should be passed on for future collectors, items without provenance while being collectable do not have history.

I’m taking mine with me in the coffin Rob. They can keep me company on the way to Valhalla!

Glad your RIF was ok in the end.

There's hope - cremation - all them metal bits'll be removed before cremation.
