Have I been scammed (Gurkha cap badge)
Hello,
(Title is a bit of an exaggeration to catch your eyes, most likely a seller mistake at worst). I bought a Royal Gurkha Rifles (1994-...) cap badge. In the picture, the badge appeared to have a slider, such as would be used on a beret. What arrived was one with lugs. Could anyone help me out... Are these lug versions used on berets, or would it be worth returning it so that I can get the correct beret version with slider. First picture is what I thought I was getting, second is what arrived (granted they upload in the right order). Also, maybe this is less of a Gurkha question, and more of a general 'current uniform' question, as I only want to know whether it is correct for berets. Cheers, Conan |

Conan,
JSP768 is the MOD catalogue and says: Other Ranks. Nickel silver. Bright silver-plate. Supplied with back-plate and cotter pin. NSN 8455-99-869-0555 Pattern No 27687 It is possible that the badge with slider is a PRI item. Tim

Cheers everyone. Tim, I saw your reply on the previous thread too. I will need to be buying a backing plate too then. Are they standard sized? Or is this going to be a hunt to find a matching one? |

You would be looking for something like this but make sure the gap between the slots matches the gap between the badge lugs.
However, I suspect that these plates are not actually used as they are just something to polish and dig into the forehead when worn in the beret! Tim

These badges with the slide arent actually RGR badges. Look at the kukris they are the same way round as the 6 GR badge.
If you look closely the RGR kukris are a different shape (fatter) and crossed the other way round. The story goes that the 6GR badge was used without the 6 until the new badges arrived. All well and good and possibly true but the 6GR badge still had lugs rather than slider. |

The JSP entry states they are for Arm badges, which for the majority do come with a plate that fits.

Thanks guys. Good observation with the kukris also! I will look for a backplate as it would be nice to have the complete badge ... But in the meantime I'd better go and give the seller some positive feedback, now that he has been proven not-guilty.
Cheers! Conan |

Conan I wouldn't bother buying a backing plate mate, they ended up being slung by majority of servicemen as they tended to cut into the beret fabric and caused a hole in the beret resulting in a new beret to be obtained and then having to shape it! You wanted to keep your original as long as possible and keep that weathered disscolouration that showed you where an old hand as It where, also older was comfitabler!

Alright, thanks.
One last things, is a tartan badge backing just sewn onto a beret? And also, should I just use a knife to make small holes in it to slot the cap badge into? I've never done this before so I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing. |

Ok thanks, I don’t think the RGR wear the tartan backing in the beret only in the felt hat ???

The Hunting Stewart Tartan is only worn on the right side of the hats Felt Gurkha, no backing is worn on the Rifle Green Beret, but, since October 2016 a Rifle Green backing is worn on the Maroon Beret when serving in 16 Air Assault Brigade.
