Help needed with First City Regiment badge
Hello all, for research purposes, I've been trying to find out what the capbadge of the First City was during the second world war era. Does anybody know what it looked like?

They are about 50mm high.

Thank you both for the replies. What I question is, though, why does it still have the '4th Infantry' designation on the badge? If I remember correctly, the '4th Infantry' designation was dropped in 1932.

Hi,
My answer is purely speculative, and I would say it was a matter of economics. The Great Depression was under the way when SA Infantry regiments dropped the numbered system and there would not have been money to redesign and re-issue badges. Most of the numbered regiments had the number as part of the shoulder title, so it was simply a matter of cutting the number off leaving the designation of the regiment. If I recall correctly, only Pretoria Regiment, Transvaal Scottish and First City had the number as part of the cap badge design. Both TS and FC retained the number in the design and PR only changed as the Regiment name changed to 'Princess Alice own Pretoria Regiment' which was incorporated into a complete redesign of the cap and collar badges. Funding for this may have come from Princess Alice herself but that is only speculative. Regards Steven |

Hi Steven,
That would quite frankly make sense. Ofcourse, it is still just a speculation, but it does sound quite believable, and therefore I'll assume that that is the case, unless I happen to find an official document explaining it.. which I doubt. |

Late WW2 the composite FC/CTH wore only a gold over green hackle on their khaki balmoral bonnets (cheaper still!).
