National Artillery Association Repository Competition
Sorry another biff question from a non-Gunner..
The excellent Litchfield and Westlake book on the Volunteer Artillery has a section about the annual NAA gunnery competitions that took place at Shoeburyness from 1865 - 1907. They describe the Queen's (later King's) Prize in some detail along with a list of winners. They also make reference to a Repository competition but don't describe what that one was. I assume it is linked in some way to the Royal Military Repository at Woolwich, presumably as the sponsor of the prize? Can anyone elaborate on what this was please? Doctor Google has not been my friend on this one.. |

Hello Expat,
Repository was the movement, mounting and dismounting, etc, of artillery ordnance and carriages using manpower and basic mechanical aids such as rope tackle and pulleys, winches (hand-powered), derricks, skids, spars, and all sorts of contrivances. It was a drill and definitely a skill, with a good knowledge of breaking strains, material and man management. The New South Wales Artillery Association held similar competitions during the late 1880s, early 1890s, between teams from the different batteries and companies. Keith |

Perhaps similar to the Royal Navy field gun competition which began in 1907 and was a highlight until 1999 of The Royal Tournament held annually in London.
Still takes place annually at HMS Collingwood. https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/our-org...e/rn-field-gun Tim

Keith thank you very much for your explanation. I can see how that would have fitted nicely alongside the Queen’s prize which was for shooting skills.
Simon, I had seen your example and it is indeed a beauty. I wonder which unit won it for that year. It seems odd to me that L&W listed the winners of the Queen’s prize but not those for the Repository. Big thanks button. Michael |

Michael,
I wish I knew who won it. Norman seemed to have the list but it probably with the NAA records. Shoeburyness was a major cog in the RA machine with lots of experimental work going on and as a consequence lots of strange Warrant Officer and SNCO ranks and a major part of the military history of Essex regards

Litchfield illustrated two Repository Prize Badges:
1885 - 1st Essex AV (gold and silver wire embroidered) 1898 - 8th Lancashire AV (metal) If I read him correctly there would be just 10x badges issued for each of the competitions. As Simon mentioned, goodness knows who the other Repository winners were! |

This book contains a list of NAA competition winning units from 1863 - 1980's apparently (no competitions during WWI).
https://www.amazon.com/The-National-.../dp/B009KST6GM The price shown at the top of the page is horrific at "$969" but it's actually $38. |

I managed to snag a copy of the booklet, an interesting read with sections on the history, the competition rules and a list of prize winners (though curiously for the shooting competitions only, not repository). Definitely worth a look if RA is your thing.
