Default 17th Lancers Cap badge w/ posts, Yea or Nay

Normally I'm not too bad at sorting the restrikes from the good ones but I'm unsure on this and going through the mountain of previous posts did little to help me.

Barring the pink nail polish in the eye sockets.... this one has a lot of wear in all the right spots and some detail where there is no wear. For example, the motto has well defined tassels, not flattened dots and its worn softer where it drapes the bones but still some texture near the lettering.

At the same time, the sockets seem well defined but there is more rounding of the forehead and nose bridge than normal.

The posts seem properly located for an earlier badge and are thin pinched. The badge is rounded and formed a bit as well.

Looks to be plated brass and tarnished in the low spots but the `tarnished areas have some lacquer residue on them.

I'm open for observations and judgement but try not to pick on me too much as it's only Monday and my week has just started. Thanks

A big Yea to my eyes. It looks to be a old sweat of a badge with much polishing wear and pinched lugs, commonly seen on Victorian and Edwardian badges, wherein the lugs were often very short. Pinching them extended the length just a bit to facilitate passing the pin through.

It needs a good cleaning (drop in some white vinegar for an hour). It looks like it has some varnish on it as well? .... hold it over the gas stove with some pliers to (gently) burn it off. I recommend a wooden toothpick to pick out the red paint in the eye sockets if its still in there after the heat.

Thank you both for your input and advise. Griff, I was hoping that you would chime in as you have quite the collection of 17th badges.

I took your advice, hit the badge with a heat gun for a bit to lift the varnish and nail polish, a bit of a vinegar bath and was amazed by the difference.

I don't keep many British badges as I mostly look for Canadian ones but this one is going to stay for a bit I think. It's just gleaming now.

Thanks again

Thats a very nice example Del.. As you look at the skull you will see a sort of a crater in the brow of the right eye. That is the easy identifier of the "Gaunt 3".
